The eight people who volunteered to tell their stories were identified through community networks.

The stories were recorded and written up by Wellington author and journalist Jane Tolerton. She spent many hours with each person as they told their life story.

"It was a privilege to meet these courageous people and hear their journeys of violence and healing. So much of what they told me resonated with my own experiences and I think that is the enormous value of this book - that we can learn from the lives and reflections of others."

The artwork used to illustrate the stories was made into an exhibition for the launch of the book in Wellington. It is touring public libraries around New Zealand during 2009.
